Ｇａｌｌｕｐをすぎて車を順調に走らせていると、後ろから土煙を上げたハーレーの団体が僕達の車を抜いていった。僕達は「おぉ～、アメリカだぁ～」と、単純に感激し、しばらく車を脇に停めて見物していた。

またしばらく車を走らせ、今度はハイウェイに乗ることになった。少し飛ばしぎみに走っていると、前の方でなにやら白いものが大きな円を描くように飛んでいくのが見えた。僕は「何だぁ？」と気にしながらもそのままのスピードで走っていた。次の瞬間思わず「あっ！」と大きな声を上げてしまった。　何と白いものはゴミ袋で、竜巻のような風の渦が天高く聳え立っているではないか。それがなんなのか気付いた時にはもう遅く、そのままのスピードで竜巻に突っ込んでしまった！風の入り口に入った瞬間、自分達の乗っていた車は一車線をいとも簡単にずらされた。出口付近では逆に一車線また戻ってくるように車を動かされ事なきを得た。僕は体が固まっていたかのように何も出来ずに走り抜けてしまったが、今思い出してもかなり恐ろしい体験をしたと思う…。

いやぁ、アメリカはでかい。そう素直に思った。ハイウェイを降りてから一般道をのんびりと走っていると、遠くの方でも赤土を巻き上げたさっきの風の渦と同じような柱が、何本も確認できた。それも、僕達が今通っている道にだんだん寄ってきているようなので、さっきの恐怖が頭をよぎり、車を飛ばして何とかやり過ごした。そうこうしている間にＧｒａｎｔｓの街もすぎ、後少しで次の目的地のＡｌｂｕｑｕｅｒｑｕｅに到着だ。

Albuquerqueへの途中に、有名なSky City と呼ばれる場所がある。地上約180メートルのmesa上で、眼下に広がる赤茶けた砂漠を見下ろし、十数所帯のAcoma インディアンが暮らしている。その生活は質素で、12世紀頃からの生活様式が未だ継続されている。電気水道の設備は皆無。夜はローソクやランプを灯し、飲料水は数日おきに共同作業で下の村落から運び上げるそうだ。ＶＥＮがこの地を訪れる機会があったら、是非見てみたい場所だ。
