Hummingbird（和名：ハチドリ）は中南米と北アメリカ各地に棲息する、体長10cm前後の極めて小さい鳥です。頭、首、背中の色の違いにより340種にも分けられるそうです。「飛ぶ宝石」と云われるように、ハチドリの身体は玉虫色で、光源とその明るさによって様々な色に変化します。"Humming"という言葉は、「歌をハミングする」という場合の“ハミング”で、ハチドリが文字通りハチのように空中で静止し花の蜜を吸う時に「ブーン」という音を立てることから来ています。ホヴァリングして嘴を花に突っ込み、さらに長い舌で蜜を吸います。古代からハチドリが愛されていたことは、「ナスカの地上絵」の一つにハチドリが登場することで判ります。私もこの地上絵を写真で見ていましたが、実際の鳥を見るまで、この“絵”がどんなによく描けているか分りませんでした。 Hummingbird (The Japanese name: hummingbird) is an extremely small bird of the length about 10cm where it lives with Latin America in various parts of North America.
